"Double Shear" upgrade for wimpy upper ball/heim joint

First thing I thought when I viewed my front suspension was what were they thinking with the wimpy upper balljoint/heim.
Had to fix lower lose spherical joint so I thought the upper should be addressed at the same time.
Found a FK Bearings bolt thru joint HJMX10T and used grade 8 hardware along with large grade 8 washer. Mike can get these joints.
Now in the highly unlikely failure of the 44,000# heim the ball joint will not come apart.
On the lower I did not like the allen head bolt so I used grade 8 hardware.
I used the same high misalignment spacer below the spherical bearing, as above, to allow full articulation with the larger bolt head.
I also used thick nyla-lock nuts to replace the thin/wimpy/jamnut sized nyla-nuts on the upper and lower.

Re: "Double Shear" upgrade for wimpy upper ball/heim joint

Where's the double shear?
Without some material connected to the spindle & attaching to the upper part of the heim it's still a single shear.
I would suggest removing the spacer & dropping the high misalignment heim right on top of the washer.
The shorter the better. It will have less leverage on the bolt.
That's why they went with the design they did.
Shortest possible mount without the need for support on top.

I thought of using a bolt on the bottom as well.
The problem was too much over hang. Way to easy to catch on rocks & such where I run it.
So I found some grade 8 allens. Way stronger & up tight & out of the way.

Re: "Double Shear" upgrade for wimpy upper ball/heim joint

I know its not really double shear hence the quotation marks.
The heim is only a 16th of an inch or 65/1000's higher above the steering knuckle than stock.
Nearly the same leverage as original just the bolt is longer.
I can take the cone spacer off the top as a small diameter washer with a 5/8 hole will be enough to give the heim full travel.

2007 HMF customized Revolt (exhaust, fuel controller, wrap, bumpers and narrowed suspension for GNCC racing).
Full hand controls, separate braking, DWT beadlocks, 2:1 steering quickener,
Fireball Billet hubs, Holeshot ATR's and Unisteer electric power steering, swaybars and Tatum rack.

Re: "Double Shear" upgrade for wimpy upper ball/heim joint

Nice thing about High miss heims. Less hardware.
I still think the stock design is a bit on the high side as well.
If you can get it down low & not incorporate any more bump steer, travel limit, or binding than it already has, I'd go with it.
That would be as strong as that spindle design can be.

I did see the quotation marks & sincerely hoped (kinda knew) you knew the difference.
But, I see that all the time. Someone puts a washer on top of a heim & calls it Double Sheer.
Sort of a hand hits forehead moment.
I guess I was just trying to bring out the fact to any of "those" people that might be reading this as it is not an example of double sheer.

To be honest when I pulled up the post I was hopeful to actually see a double sheer mount.
I was bummed to see it was not.

Well done on the upgrade though. It will definitely be something you can trust.
