steering bind

Just an update on what I found on my 09 XL

My car has been sitting in it's normal state these days.

I was talking to a friend about the bad suspension geometry on the car.
As well as the steering linkage being out of "Time" from the factory.
I grabbed the steering wheel, with the car at full droop on stands, & turned it.
It bound up at only a few degrees of sweep.

As I forced it a little further I saw the arm raise up.
Upon further inspection I found the lower spherical bearing binding up on the cup flange.

Instead of grinding any metal off the flange I decided to toss on a couple of limit straps. I measured out that 26-1/2" should do it.
Full droop was around 27-1/2 inches. At the shock.
I got a set of 26" straps that stretched to 26-1/2" once installed.
I know, not the best way. Or proper way for that matter, to mount it.
But the simple & fastest way to eliminate the bind issue.
Being the suspension & tire combo is so light, it shouldn't be a problem.

Once installed, I swept the steering, full lock to lock, no bind at full droop.
Travel loss is minimal. About one inch at the shock.

Re: steering bind

That should keep the Fox shocks from topping out hard too.

Good Idea! Thanks for the photos and info.

What front hubs do you have?

Re: steering bind

The air shocks have internal limiters (spring stop) inside so they aren't too much of a concern.

But once I put on the front set of coil overs. Then for sure, the straps will be needed.

The front hubs are the Fireball hubs celette got for us.
I have them in the rear as well.

Clear your PM box! LOL

I got them from Kartek.

You have to call to order.
If you have a local Off Road Shop you should be able to get a set there as well.

Thanks!

Re: steering bind

This how I decided to do to fix my steering bind. My frame is welded all jacked up and out of square from redline. I chose to do this since moving the steering rack back really screwed up the geometry on the front. Full droop now and no binding. I can turn the front wheels both ways to full lock at full droop and it does not lift the a-arms anymore.

Re: steering bind

Interesting fix.
I have plenty of room in that area on mine.
