Double shear set-up your tierods!!!

I broke a tierod in june racing. Actually it just blewout the inerds and came off over the bolt head. Not sure if all redlines are set up like this but I think it is a poor/dangerous design. I purchased new FK tierod replacement/upgrade ends. I set the new ends up in a double shear configuration. (I would recommend doing this double shear setup even if you don't change to better ends) So now even if they blow apart they won't come apart. Thought I would pass this along after reading an old post/inquiry about better ends. Found a picture of my set-up which simply is a hardened washer to prevent the end from coming apart over the bolt head. If you blow up the picture below and squint you can see the washer added. Sorry, tryed to make it real large and couldn't.
Edit 11/1/11 better pics.

Re: Double shear set-up your tierods!!!

I am interested to see the double shear. Can you post some close ups? The only way I can think of getting double shear is by machining a new mounting bracket, so I am curious to see yours.

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology lets just call it Cheap Insurance.
Picture of true double shear:

My solution has some of the benefits or double shear without the cost/change; " The double surface reduces the strain on the fastener that is through the rod end. It also captivates the spherical bearing in the rod end to help contain certain failure modes of spherical bearing rod ends." (Quote from same posting I stole picture from)

Re: Double shear set-up your tierods!!!

Thanks for the pics-- Sorry, I never saw that you had updated them. The washers will certainly give it a better chance of having the heim stay put should it fail. Cheap insurance it is!

To be true double shear, the bolt (in this case) must be support on both sides right at the interface where the bolt enters the heim. Supporting the bolt in this fashion will not allow it to bend; the only way the bolt could fail would be in shear and since it is supported on both sides it makes it "double shear".
