Re: How much octane?

unless you drop a 12.5:1 or higher compression piston in you dont need to run 110 oct it would be a waste of money IMO and you gain nothing from running race gas if anything it might slow you down cause the compression is not high enough to burn the gas as it should when running it with high comp..
well this is comparing this to a quad a yfz450 its a 11:1 compression and running anything over 91 oct is a waste and you wont see any performance gains in just the gas

the only gas i have found that adds 1-2 hps just buy using the gas is VP U4.2 and these gains were seen on a dyno and on many different builds but im not to sure how the EFI would react to an oxy fuel but that would be a gas to try and see some gains

Jay,

It was my understanding, which backs up what your are saying about the calibration that the programming is already to the "rich side of the meter" so to speak. And it was explained to me by engineering that they did that to try and squeeze as much Hp out of the engine and still meet the EPA restrictions or standards that they(Redline) are held to.

Here's to Pipes and Free flowing intakes! Amen Jay! Amen!

Re: How much octane?

OK, well that explains why I didn't have a problem. I was hoping that the computer would compensate for the change.
FYI: Using K&N's formulas, the stock filter will pass just enough air, @ 8000 RPM, CLEAN.
So after a small amount of dust gets on it, it is restrictive.
You will need 33% or 1/3rd larger to compensate for dirt - minimum.

Four-by-nut, "if you swap out for a free flowing exhaust and intake, you need to update the computer to take advantage so you don't run lean and burn stuff up."

I've done both. You do gain a little HP, mostly top end RPM to redline. It hasn't had that bad lean smell, but then I'm at 4,300" and above. Remapping would be good.

Re: How much octane?

Good follow up!! It sure seems a closed loop efi controller would be a great option and I think that Wasteland offers a different unit that they can tune. It sure would be nice to see an option for altering maps if a O2 logger like a Wide Band Commander were used to remap......

Re: How much octane?

Got a response from the Weber guys the other day. They said:

"Unfortunately higher grade fuel would not hlep unless the engine is re-mapped to take advantage of the higher octane. I am not aware of anyone doing that kind of performance work to date.

The only easy change is a less restrictive exhaust system. You can gain about four horsepower by doing that. I think Redline is close to offering this. You may also want to use a larger two stage air intake filtration from Donaldson or Fleetguard. The original one is a just a bit restrictive.

An expensive option is to change to a turbo charged engine. Redline is just finalizing a factory coversion that is quite unique so it all fits. The base engine has pistons swapped (lower compression), high temp exhaust valves, and they reconfigure our turbo to be upside down so it will fit in with special brackets and swap to the turbo intake manifold and single TB and new single exhaust.

You might want to contact them to see if they are willing to convert used buggies, or do it through someone else like Wasteland Performance (normally does Ranger and Rzr conversions) or Watcon.com (Weber Aftermarket Dealer Distributor in Washington)."

I have followed up with a question about needing to re-tune the computer if you do an exhaust swap because there is no O2 sensor. I believe, like in a Rhino, if you swap out for a free flowing exhaust and intake, you need to update the computer to take advantage so you don't run lean and burn stuff up. No O2 sensor to adjust the fuel curves, etc. More to come........

Re: How much octane?

I run Premium pump gas. I've had my Revolt up to 9,250' and it runs great. I cant breath, but the Revolt seems to do fine.
Lower altitudes, you can use higher octane fuel >2,000'.

Re: How much octane?

Hey Jay,

I would be curious to hear what the have to say when they get back with you. My Revolt runs perfectly fine on 91 octane pump gas. I never have had any predetonation (pinging) issues running 91.

Is the guy at Weber you are talking to named Marcel?

Re: How much octane?

I have an email into our contacts at Weber asking this exact same question. I will let you know what they come back with. For me, this is only effective (going to a higher octane fuel) if the computer/motor has the ability to adjust the spark advance and fuel delivery.

More to come.........
