Re: Checking oil, parking brake, backfiring

SC Revolt -- thanks for the welcome! We're happy to be in the Redline family.

Red Rock Rails -- thanks for clearing up the parking brake puzzle for us and explaining the oil-checking procedure. As far as the yellow check engine light -- it came on more frequently the second trip than it did on the first time we took it out, so it seems that the problem (whatever it may be) is getting worse. Hot or cold doesn't make a difference. We feel no difference in power when it comes on. I haven't noticed whether it happens during acceleration or deceleration, but I will pay attention to that next weekend (our third trip with it).

We live in Old Torrance, south of Los Angeles. So far, we've taken Rowdy down to the Imperial Sand Dunes and up to the high desert near Ridgecrest. It's been fun! So easy to drive compared to our old (as in antique) VW buggy, which finally gave up the ghost (not even duck tape and bailing wire could revive it, which is why we ended up with a nearly-new Redline Riot).

Re: Checking oil, parking brake, backfiring

Hi Rowdy!

I have yet to see or work on a Riot that had a parking brake. I saw the same thing in my manual. I know that Redline made some with parking brakes that were being shipped to another country because of their laws (I think it was Portugal). I am pretty sure you don't have a parking brake.

As far as the dip stick, I unscrew it wipe it off and then dip it and read the stick. Don't fill your reservoir all the way up to the full mark (per Redline). Take it to the add mark and if you go over just a little you are O.K. If you fill it up all the way or over fill it you risk contaminating the MAP sensor by getting oil residue in the air box. The oil residue gets drawn up into the air intake contaminating the sensor.

When your yellow light comes on is it warm? cold? accelerating or decelerating? Is you performance changing when the light comes on?

Where are you located in SoCal?

Checking oil, parking brake, backfiring

Hi all,

We're proud owners of a new (at least to us) Redline Riot. We have no dealer close by, so we got a shop manual to supplement the owner's manual. The shop manual mentions a parking brake (it says the Riot must be in forward gear to set the parking brake), but -- where is it? How do you set it?

Also, do you screw in the dipstick to check the oil level, or merely set it on top like a motorcycle?

And, any ideas about what might causing our Riot to backfire upon deceleration? The yellow check engine light also comes on frequently; perhaps it's a related problem to the backfiring?

All advice welcome!
