I have found that Redline Oil Shock Proof gear oil works the best. We here in the Northwest use the light wt. since the weather isn't extremely hot. It's also available in heavy wt. It sticks to all surfaces in the gearbox so it seems to work the best for us. My second choice would be Royal Purple.

Just curious if it would be a great idea to install a oil catch can after the tranny breather?

I don't mean to step on Eric's thread but if you put air pressure to the stock vent hole while you drill and tap it will blow the chips out and you don't have to split the case. If you are going to split the case, drill and tap it while the case is apart. This has been discussed before on this forum about air pressure to the cases. I have done it many times with success. The fittings should be 1/4" pipe 90 deg to 3/8" hose barb. Any smaller ID hose will not breath. I don't use a breather bottle with a bottom inlet since the fluid that runs back into the gearbox is usually part water from condensing. I drain out the fluid that gets in the bottle. It is mostly water from everything being hot and then cold. I run the engine oil tank breather to another inlet on the same breather bottle.

It sounds like he has a series 1 gearbox. The intermediate gears and shaft can be a bitch sometimes because the gears can be pressed too far one way or the other. I always put everything together dry and tighten up a few case bolts to check if all the gears move freely. Then I take it back apart and lube it and put sealer on the case before final assembly. The cases will go together with only a few taps from a dead blow hammer at most. You probably need to press the center shaft one way or the other to take the bind out of it.

Re: Transmission Breather Fix

The bolts do not press the cases together - they go together easily by hand and you will be able to turn the gears by hand if assembled correctly. Sounds like they didn't press the bearing all the way onto the shaft (or something similar). The transmission will need to be disassembled and bearings pressed on correctly.
