Actually I'm in the process of buying a 2008 Yamaha apex engine with 2000 miles on it, just figuring out all the extras ill need. Can't wait to get it in the riot

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

I guess I will keep this thread going, did you do the motor swap with the nytro motor? I will be doing one this summer after desert season is over. just wanted to see how its coming along.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

I agree that if I was going to stick it 140hp then the turbo is a cheaper reliable option, but the problem is if I decide i want to turn the power up to say 180hp. Then it seems that the weber is not a reliable option to have with that much power, if it takes a 3000 dollar computer, and a few manifolds, it doesnt seem like a cheap project haha but is awesome. I feel for that money I could boost this nytro with their 260hp turbo kit not that I want that much power but the mcx 180hp 110lbs kit would be pretty badass way down te road. Seems to me if I want over 140 the nytro is the way to go...
But if I'm content with 140 ( most likely will be) then the turbo is the route to take.
So is it all depends how much cash it would take to get this nytro in... Probably more then it's worth for a few extra hp. But I'm waiting on a rough estimate from a few people who have done similar swaps to crush that idea and cement the turbo. but we will see

Can't wait to see some video of that awesome car rrawtry, good luck kickin ass!

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

Sand racer nailed it! The stock weber turbo is reliable and powerful! I speak from experience! I first big bored my Weber to 800 cc naturally aspirated and was estimated to run about 120 horse. The key was in the ECU which I run a ViPec. Which is $3000.00 by itself. It was reliable as I had the cylinders reclined with cast iron liners. I chose to turbo the engine after I finished racing and run the Garrett turbo. I'm on my third exhaust manifold an finally went t snowmobile racers for the cure! The safest most dependable and affordable Weber power is from a FST turbo like Sandracer, Jetwrench and Rick run. Easiest to install and tune also! I'm a year into it an finally ready to kick some ass I think with 210 HP! I hope!

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

Hey Shawn,
My turbo has 3,000-3,500 miles on it according to my brothers rzr odometer. You cannot go off of redlines since it is so inaccurate.

My set up is out of the fst snowmobile. All stock Weber. Try and research that. It should help you get more accurate info.

Installed it was 4,500.00 for almost double the horsepower. A bargain in my eyes.
The weber is not cheap to fix for sure if something goes bad. No doubt about it.

I bored2 strokes in the day and always ran hotter. Never done the new 4 strokes. Just gun shy i guess and not a whole lot of bang for the buck if you ask me.

Plumbing is easy. If you had an after market (non weber) turbo i would be a little more hesitant since you have to deal with a custom made exhaust manifold for mounting. Weber is cast and ready to go.
No worries i just want to keep the record straight about weber set up. It rips and is reliable as hell. Good luck too all who are pushing the limits and searching for the hp. That is why most of us are here. To help and offer what we know. I don't know it all by any means but am not afraid or unwilling to offer info and help if you want to call it that.lol

Later,
Todd

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

It was just a general on motors that people I know that have added turbo's to their rides have had issues with reliability. That's great you have good luck with yours how many miles have you put on it in that time?

That sounds like plenty enough hp's for me and will give it a second look. I did research before I bought the car about a turbo and I maybe wrong but the turbo Weber motor that comes factory is not the same motor as far as I understand it , I will research this again and see if I did so in error.

If you do not mind me asking what did it cost? and did you install your self how hard was the plumbing to fit. These Weber engines seem really expensive to fix if you get something wrong, I have big bored my last 2 raptors with no heat issues , along with every dirt bike I've ever owned since I kid. It has been kind of a normal thing for me.

The guy that I bought the car from had a turbo for from Weber, but did not install it for my same concerns, and was going to give it to the person who put us in contact. Maybe I should see what he did with, it could be a less expensive and time route to take. Sorry if I sounded like I was speaking for you I apologize.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

I'm definitely not aiming for 200, but 160-170 in a side by side doesn't sound to bad. Most likely I will go with the turbo, but I am curious as to what kind of torque it puts out? If its close to the same price I would prefer a naturally aspirated engine with constant power, but a few foot pounds of torque isn't worth a few grand. but It would be nice to be able to bump it up over 140 if desired down the road, as opposed to the turbo that is pretty well maxed out. But we will see, another month or 2 before I pull the trigger

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

Sdshawn,
You have me confused with someone else i have had no issues to speak of with my turbo. 3+ years of bullet proof 130-140hp at 15lbs of boost. 160-180 would still be good usable power for everyday riding fun. Anything over that in my opinion would get to be more than you want to try and control for duning and trails. My turbo is a factory Weber turbo. DESIGNED BY WEBER FOR THE WEBER MOTOR. I don't know what you are talking about using something it is not designed for. Do some more research. Anytime you bore a motor you are going to create more heat and shorten the life of a motor. I do not suggest big boring a motor as a first option.

Stick with the turbo medicineman.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

I agree to much unusable power would be a waist, I have heard to many problems when your turbo something that was not designed for it from the get go. Not knowing enough about the Weber I think I would big bore it before a turbo , from what I understand a turbo Weber motor and a non turbo motor are quite different on internal parts.

Plus for the price to turbo doing a motor swap may be cheaper .. I have almost no experience with my revolt yet but I know that 72 will not be enough for me but anything over a 100 would make me grin I'm sure, that and either a steering stablelizer or power should keep me happy for awhile .
