Re: way too rich

i bought a innovate brand wideband off of ebay. i installed the bung about 3 inches from the header collector. i took the bung and put it on the pipe then smacked it with a hammer to make the pipe flat. then i drilled a hole in the pipe on the flat spot, and had a muffler shop weld it on for $3. the oxygen sensor doesnt protrude into the pipe like i thought they did.

So, whats the most cost effective wideband? What about bung placement?
Cost effective? What are you looking for, the cheapest gauge, or the best? Any of the name brand gauges are good. They run from about $175 to $250 and all you have to do is read the instructions on the installation. The only welding required is the bung. No big deal, if you can't do it, take it to your local welding shop. The info you get from this gauge is invaluable. Just make sure you are buying a wide band air fuel ratio gauge and not a narrow band.

Thanks, for all the info.

Yup, those are the numbers. The injector I went for has about a 20% reduction in flow over the OEM. Stock injectors had me in the high 10's and low 11's AFR with no fuel controller and open intake/exhaust. The new injectors have me at a very nice 12.8 AFR with the Big Gun controller running mid-range so there is still upward/downward adjust-ability.
So let me get this right. You're saying, without the Big Gun Controller, you were still running slightly rich? What altitude do you ride at?
I know that small engines, typically run on the rich side, to keep internal temperatures low. Running to lean will melt pistons. Especially, at high rpm's. (Yes, I learned that the hard way.)
12 AFR sounds about right.
Most of the trails here, range from 2,300 to 9,000+ feet.
I don't have a AFR gauge, but I can smell the unburned gas in the exhaust.
Yes, we (whynot and myself) were both running rich without the fuel controller (or the fuel controller at it's lowest settings). I would imagine you're considerably worse off at those altitudes.

We're running at sea level at the west coast. I'll get some high altitude numbers after the St Anthony's Idaho trip in a few weeks (curious to see how it effects AFR).

As for correct AFR, I can say by experimenting over several rides that the Weber motor feels and sounds much better in the mid 12's for AFR. Going over 13 AFR the motor gets a bit lean sounding and there's a slight loss of power. Right now I can run WOT at about 65 MPH and the motor sounds great. Spark plug readings also tell the tale...
