No screen at the end of the pick up hose. I have two fuel filters on the XL (one before and one after the fuel pump) so a screen isn't needed.
Good idea. Save that fuel pump.

The tank is a very tight fit in the frame. A mount was made that cradles it in the frame. I actually bought a non vented fuel cap from a Polaris RZR and drilled a tiny hole for venting to clear under the hood.

The inlet petcock is an easy install. Just drill a 9/16" hole in your tank. Push grommet half way on the petcock then push the grommet/petcock into the hole in tank and then push the petcock the rest of the way into the grommet. Nice tight seal.
That reminds me of my old '63 bug that I had to lift the hood to fuel .

Great idea!
Some small aircraft have a floppy pick-up, so that the engine can pick up fuel even upside down.

Re: How far on a tank full

Whynot and myself have been working on this too. Keep in mind, we both have the clear tank without a fuel gauge. Here's what we have found out:

Without a vent line, the fuel tank will not fill completely. There will be an air pocket in the top of the tank.

The stock pickup line does not reach the bottom of the tank. Note this picture of the stock pick up. The wire next to the pick up tube is the actual depth to the bottom of the fuel tank. The screen is about 3/8" off the bottom of the tube, so there is 1.5" of fuel that the pick up won't get to.

I replaced the stock pick up tube with a flexible clear fuel line with a brass end piece that lays on the bottom of the tank (sorry, no pictures). It's similar to the "clunker" pick ups used by model airplanes/helicopters.

I also installed a vent line in the fuel gauge block off plate.

Last and most important, we came up with a 1 gallon auxiliary tank mounted under the hood that fills the main tank via a petcock on/off valve. With this setup, we have a solid 6 gallon capacity.

Re: How far on a tank full

I have been going off my buddy's ryno. He gets the lead on the weekly ride because I kick up to much dust! I don't know how spot on Ryno's speedo and mile counter is.

My speedo never worked at all from day one. My mileage was based off GPS too.

That's a fact....the stock gauge is waaaay off. My distances are based on gps or race markers. I disconnected my speedo about 10 minutes after I got it!
