Can-Am’s Rumored Commander SSV, the Fastest UTV on the Planet?Posted By: Tony Trapizona | May 26th, 2010

Over on the canamsxs.com forum someone posted a picture of what appears to be Can-Am’s highly anticipated Side by Side. They have been calling the sexy new UTV a “Can-Am Commander SSV”.

From the looks of the picture it appears Can-Am’s first Side by Side will be much more of a performance oriented model than a work machine. With its small bed it looks to be in the same market as the sporty Polaris RZR.

As for the engine, some are saying it will use Can-Am’s soon to be announced 800cc Rotax, which is said to be a super lightweight twin cylinder dual overhead cam four stroke that features Can-Am’s ACE technology (Advanced Combustion Efficiency). Supposedly Can-Am engineers have figured out a unique way to minimize friction, optimize combustion and speed up intake and exhaust flow. With this they maximize fuel economy without reducing performance. All in all this would seem to be the logical choice for their first UTV product.

However, Can-Am isn’t your ordinary manufacturer. They tend to raise the envelope and are extremely innovative, with that said, some are saying that Can-Am is about to absolutely blow the doors off the UTV market by stuffing their highly advanced high performance 998cc V-Twin Spyder engine in the new Commander SSV. Can-Am claims that their Spyder produces 106 hp at 8500 rpm with 77 lb-ft of torque at 6250 rpm. It tops out at a governed 110 mph and accelerates from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. In short, saying Can-Am would have the fastest UTV available would be the understatement of the year.

Regardless as to what engine Can-Am’s new Commander UTV project will use, since Can-Am owns their own engine company that has proven to build hi-tech reliable and crazy-fast powerplants, we’re confident in saying that the Commander Side by Side machine wont be underpowered.

We’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear more on this new sure-to-be-a-hit machine from Can-Am.
