Building of a Race Riot

This thread is to document our build of a Race Riot from the ground up to be raced in The Best In The Desert and Score race serieses. We plan to race the Vegas to Reno and Baja 1000 this year in a Redline Side-by-Side Riot.

I will start with a picture of the chassis. We started with a stock chassis, added some bars on the sides as well as some additional gusseting in important areas. We have had the chassis tech inspected and it now passes their requirements.

I'd be interested in buying a set of bumpers if you come up with a good set while your building your own...

The chassis is actually a stock chassis with additional gussets added as well as side bars. Our direction is to keep it as stock as possible. Showing what a person can do with their stock Riot and additional pieces to make it meet racing tech inspections as well as strengtening areas for the long races.

I will try to get a side shot. But keep in mind.........it is stock in shape. So it will look exactly like a stock Riot.

Re: Building of a Race Riot

I have it now in Dallas, Texas....... It didn't pass the Baja series tech specs, but I understand it passed BITD and Whiplash. So..... I plan on getting it ready this winter in my off season at work and campaigning it out West next season. Still working on some efi upgrades or possibly running a GSX 750cc engine in it if I can get the right rear end.... I've found some extremely race proven chain drive diffs, but they are in the multi thousand dollar range.

Re: Building of a Race Riot

Redline corp pulled the plug on this about 9 or 10 months ago. They sold the chassis to rrawtry. After the mods we made, we had it inspected by Cory Sappington of the UTV racing association. BITD uses them as their "bible" for tech requirements. He said the chassis was good to go for BITD and he would pass it if it was entered into a race. Keep in mind, there is no paperwork that is signed saying "it has passed inspection". This was just a "nice to have" inspection by him to be sure we were going down the right path. Officially, you don't pass inspection until you have passed it at the race, each and every race!

As for SCORE, it did not pass their pre-inspection. The problem was that, for them, they don't utilize the UTV racing association's guidelines. They use their own. And they don't have specific rules for UTVs. Therefore, it has to follow their guidelines for any race truck (like a trophy truck). The only issue they had was that the "B" pillar, over the driver/passenger's head, did not have it's cross bracing within the plane of the B-pillar. We tried to argue that there was plenty of cross bracing and based on the weight of the rig (probably around 1000 lbs), it would not be enough to crush in on anyone. Their counter was not about the rig rolling on itself, but rather a large truck landing on it and that it would crush the roll cage. I couldn't convince them otherwise, so..........it wasn't "legal" in their eyes to race SCORE.

So.........that's the skinny.

rrawtry: Hope you like it........

Re: Building of a Race Riot

It sounds pretty lax. Whiplash is easier than BITD. But Whiplash doesn't really have much of a "rule book" either. Your better off just going to the UTV Racing Association's website and downloading their rule book. It is VERY good and detailed. If you build it to those specs, you are good anywhere (except for SCORE). Things that come to mind that you would need (for a Riot):

=> Amber tail light (solid)
=> Amber tail light (flashing)
=> Blue tail light (flashing)
=> Extra gussetting and tube work at specific points (I could help with pointing out where if you get serious)
=> Fire extinguisher
=> Window Nets (or wrist restraints)
=> First Aid kit
=> Put your battery in an aluminum or metal box. On a Riot it is up front. If you locate it to the back, you would then need a firewall.
=> Padded shoulder belts (or put a pad around them)

For a Revolt you would also need to do:
=> Upgrade upper cage to be 1.5"x0.95 wall DOM (min)

That's all I can think of off hand.
