I want to add a set of 5 inch 55w Halogen Offroad lights to the Revolt... Will I have enough power?


Just wanted to make sure...

I was about to ask the same question as we are entering an endurance race later in the year and it has a night stage in it, the standard lights just dont show the kangaroos until your ontop of them
How big can we go?

I just put some 7" HIDs on mine. They are 35 watts a piece and put out a bunch of light. I seen them on jetrenchs ride and was real happy with them. $235.00 online. I will post some pics after I finish the wiring this weekend. You can run the stock lights pointed down low and the 7" high. Here is a pic of jets ride with the 7" HIDs. Just found this on buggynews forum $50 each less than half price. Same ones I am running. Link is by the pic below.

I have bought a set of 100 Watt 6 inch Offroad lights for the front... I know we have a 350 watt system, so will I be pulling to many watts to still charge the battery....No sure what the stock lights pull, but I will need tob add that to the total watts too..... Will I have any issues?

On my Riot, I have added a 12" LED light from Rigid Industries. It doesn't pull much energy. In addition I have the stock headlights. And don't forget about the electric fan!!! It pulls a good deal of power.

About 6 months ago I was on a trip to the dunes. I ran all day long with no issues (no lights on). I then went on a night run which took about 2-3 hours. I was running all of the lights. I'm pretty sure the fan was running most of the time the engine was running. Towards the end we stopped to checkout the view. When I tried to restart it, it would barely turn over! YIKES. I was able to get it to fire and make it back to camp (with lights on). Back at camp I turned it off and couldn't get it to turn over later to load it on the trailor.

Since that time I have run a lot of tests to see if my voltage regulator was a problem or not. I went ahead and got a new regulator and installed it. My voltage tests before and after were pretty much the same. At about 3k with all of my lights on, I have a voltage at the battery of about 12.8 volts! So I'm thinking that with this simple setup, I'm on the edge and the battery isn't charging. Without the lights........it keeps up fine.

I haven't had a chance to retry on a night run. So I can't say it anything has changed with the new regulator. But I think I can be confident in saying that I'm on the edge with stock lights, stock fan, and the 12" LED light.

If I were you, after you install the lights, I would go out and just putt around for 3 or 4 hours with the lights on and see if it kills the battery. That's about the only way I can think of to know FOR SURE.....and because you are looking to race with it you need to be SURE it's not a problem. And don't try to figure that out with just numbers and calculations. Go run it and find out.

Thanks for all the Great Info.. Has anyone ever though of installing an additional battery to run the lights on (Just for night Rides).. Just have the Lights run off the stand alone battery... Then Charge it during the day at camp, etc.... I wonder how long a standard battery would last with 300 watts pulling from it... 2hrs? 3, 4 ...

It seems to be a good idea for just the night riding.. Well who knows, Im just brainstorming...

Don't forget about the fuel pump, dash lights, added gauges, and accessories. Starter draw, also what the ECU and ignition pull. Stock headlights alone are 55w each, I think the pump pulls 72w. Jeff was having the same starting issues when running the lights. With the lights on causing low battery voltage he also had running issues. The addition of the alternator and larger battery fixed it.

Ditch the stock lights & add two 7" or 8" HID's

You will get way better light out in front of you & gain 40 watts back in your favor.

If you replace the stockers for the 5" 55w lights you will come out even.

I believe the charging system on this rig is just enough to handle what the car came with.

I think Mikey is right. I added an Optima car battery to my Race Riot and I still discharged it in 2 miles of hard running with radios and all other kinds of garbage. I think running an alternator off the secondary clutch input shaft would be trick and handle lots of extra goodies. Never tried it though.

Extra lighting was something the factory toyed around with for awhile with little success on an easy cost-defective way on installing. For a short while the factory offered an accessory light rail for the roof of the revolt but costs and testing and power issues with a halogen light draining let to a very mush shortened power life.

On the Riot a 3 and 4 light bar across the roof were also tested but had the same issue with draining the power after extended use. Factory tinkered with extra power sources and alternaters but was soon abandoned for the turbo project. We decided more raw hp out of the Riot was more crucial at that time versus night riding. No aftermarket light rails were ever sold to a customer and were only on a price list for a short time. Wish I could be more helpful but that's where you are.
