Engine swap or turbo...

Hey everyone, got another big question for the forum. I just posted in the engine section asking about turbo reliability, but now can't get the idea of an engine swap out of my mind. I am all for more power, but really want some reliability to go along with it. It seems to me that swapping out for a naturally aspirated engine with power is going to be easier in the long run? More specifically I am weighing my options between going with an r1 (open to other suggestions) or just throwing a turbo on the weber. I know the apex will of course be more expensive and more work to get in the riot, I just can't decide if its worth all the extra money and work or if it will be a reliable option?

I am guessing that by the time I am done with the r1 it would be closer to the 8-10k range plus having the weber to sell? And 5k for the turbo set up? I am also very curious how much work the swap will be compared to the turbo, or if I would even be capable of doing the swap with myself and a few machine shops. And if not I'm sure the work would be extremely expensive to pay for the swap, but I'm very interested to hear some opinions. I will be doing something in the upcoming months, and since it will be my first project and a pretty penny to complete, I would greatly appreciate some advice or suggestion. And of course feel free to crush my r1 dreams haha just need some help before I spend all my money, thanks in advance
Steve

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

I have been toying with a motor swap idea also, I just picked up my revolt a couple of weeks ago and still need to drive it . I've only taken it out for a quick cruise but not at speed, I think its really fun but I know how I am and I never can get enough power.

I also worry about turbo reliability when hard driving the car, I first thought about going with a big bore kit when the time comes to step it up. But how much power could I get safely and how much would it cost me.How much hp more hps would I want thinking somewhere between 130-160 I think would be perfect for me

Tranny might not hold up but there are some better ones out there . Now if you go with a motor swap witch one with gears w/o gears, I was looking at the Yamaha nytro motor its a triple 1050 cc snowmobile around 130 hp , I just need to find out if it will fit width wise with out major frame work.

Thought about a bike motor chain into a gear box like the Drakart set up, again room in a revolt is limited.

the Drakart guy said that Kawi had a better Trans for this type of application and most bike motors are cheap to pick up, I might look into a v-twin bike motor witch would maybe fit a little better. Anyway sorry for the ramble , who else have thought about this.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

Hi, Im here in Ecuador with the same doubt but because i own a revolt, but bucause I already swap a fl400 pilot to a 750cc Katana engine, I would say it is an excelent option, just think in installing a handicap electronic up/down shifter so you won´t have to fight with gears

Interesting discussion... I just received my Yamaha Nytro motor last week. I am going for the swap in my revolt. The Nytro makes 138HP @ 8600 RPM and 90 FT LBS of torque @ under 7500 RPM. Turbo charged they can produce over 300 HP. I chose the Nytro over the Apex as i really want to squeeze it in without modifying the frame and saving the couple of inches with the triple should allow me to do that. Should be a fun winter project. Probably going to swap the gearbox for a RPM box so that i can handle the power reliably.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

If I had it to do all over again I'd run the Queen Racing Terminator Mod on the Weber 880cc. I've got the punched out 800cc Weber with cast iron inserts and the vipec ecu. Using the Garrett GT 2250 turbo. I've been in R and D for a year and finally am getting it dialed in.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

Awsome, I think that will be the ticket. take notes along the way. So you think it should clear with clutches? I might be mistaken but I thought the RPM Drive it on the wrong side, that was the gear box I would of wanted to work with. Please keep me posted along the way.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

I do think that it will fit with the clutches lined up in their current configuration. The motor measures 12 3/4" from the center of the PTO to top of the valve cover. From the inside edge of the clutch it measures 16" to the edge of the head. Rough measurements show the frame being 17" from the inside edge of the clutch and 13 1/2" from the center of the PTO so it is going to fit tight for sure. I will know better once I get the Weber out and start to mock it up.

The RPM gearbox does have the some configuration as our stock gearbox, check out this thread:

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

I have no idea why I thought it was different ,that's great that it should work, I also just saw the I thinks its a arttic cat twin 1000 Z1 or something but the shaft on the wrong side. Although I had a Artticat HTZ 1000 , it was a pile I dumped it 12k loss. Never would ever buy that brand again , I though I heard the motor was a Suzuki correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

Mhallman, that's awesome at this point it is actually between the nytro or going turbo. I like that the nytro puts out about 15 more torque then the r1 an is a perfect size, good call man. Does anyone know what kind of torque the were will put out with the turbo? Where did you manage to find your engine? And any idea an estimatr on cost for the swap? I've been looking for a week or so and haven't found much. Can't wait to see it in that revolt should be an awesome ride.
To turbo or to nytro.... So far leaning turbo because of the time it would take and depends on how much I could get the work done for.

Re: Engine swap or turbo...

Actually, I am leaning toward both, as in turbo charging the Nytro (maybe, could be just wishful thinking). I bought my motor from SKE snowmobile parts, they are located in Minnesota. Motor was reasonable too, $2500 shipped, included everything needed to run, wiring harness, ECU, fuel pump, oil tank plus complete motor with nothing stripped off except for the clutch.

I am going to try and do all of the work myself on the swap so hopefully the only monies I have to spend will be just materials to fab motor mounts and hose connections, fabricating an exhaust and intake. I feel my largest challenge will be getting the clutches properly aligned.

Once I get the Weber out I will probably start a thread to show progress and what obstacles I encounter.
