Rack and Pinion Upgrade?

I found an old thread (confusing) about the Pro-Am Billet steering rack as being the HD upgrade for the Revolt. Seems it is bolt in except for a need to change the U-Joint as the spline is different. what the spline count is was never answered.
Could someone verify/clarify the above interpretation?
Are there HD FK rod ends availiable for when I do this job?
Is there a cheaper place to get one than below link? Thanks in advance.

I believe this is the same as stock.
VW Steering System – Dune Buggy Steering System –Mounts & Boxes | AppleTreeAuto.com

The Pro Am is 2" longer(not that it should matter). Maybe you can contact each vendor about what spline is on each rack.

Borgeson Universal Company :: Universal Joints should have a joint you can use.

Mike at Red Rock can help you with the Heims you need.

I hear this is a good rack as well.

Re: Rack and Pinion Upgrade?

I think both SC Revolt (Chuck) and xmotocr (Jerry) ran that box in their race cars. I talked to them about it a while back and I don't remember them saying anything about having to change the u-joint and spline count on the steering shaft. I think it is a 5/8 -36 spline.

"Jeff H" that races a Revolt might have upgraded too. Maybe one of these guys will chime in and bring us up to speed.

Bear foot makes a kit that tightens up the stock boxes and makes them better. Maybe he will post up some pics of his kit after he reads this this post.

Re: Rack and Pinion Upgrade?

Thanks everyone, the more I look at these the more I like the Tatum box.
Will this longer box fit. Specs and features seem to make it a good choice.
I like how it ties both side together, zerk and sealed bearing.

Tatum Billet Aluminum A-Arm Rack and Pinion Steering Features:

Male stub is 3/4-48 spline for steering shaft

Rack Measures 14 Inches Long 2.5 Inches Wide

Standard mounting pattern 6 inches wide 1 inch tall from center to center of bolt holes

Rack uses standard heim joints with 1/2 inch holes

Zerk fitting for regreasing the rack and pinion

Sand sealed bearing for pinion

Re: Rack and Pinion Upgrade?

I just pulled the trigger on the above Tatum Billet Rack. Paypal/Bill me Later 6-Months interest free is a great thing.
I spoke to the owner Rich who answered all my questions.
The rack has 4.5 inches of travel at 1.5 turns lock to lock. I think the Redline only uses 3.5. If that is true the steering will be even quicker.
Rich said the longer and wider gears give more surface area and stated they work flawlessly in 3000# cars with power steering for 10 plus years.
I have to change the u-jount to 3/4-48 spline but he said most the bigger boxes are that size.
I won't have to worry about my power steering tearing up the chinese box leaving me crashed or stranded.
BTW, I just asked for free shipping and his daughter (Tatum) sent me a Paypal invoice for $299. Great guy/company to deal with.http://www.tatummotorsports.com/store.php?cPath=13_75
Will update after the install.

Re: Rack and Pinion Upgrade?

Update: Bought the Tatum box and what a beautiful work of art!!
Started install and It is going to work with some fabrication (longer bolts, spacers for bracket, new u-joint, new longer swedge tubes, and some grinding to fit the grease zerk)

Old box is still surprisingly really tight in the gear area. Just the front piece is really worn and lose fitting. Anyone want a box to rebuild? as I will never need another one. $50 shipped

Will take some pictures of final install probably tomorrow.

For anyone else thinking of upgrading to this box I highly recommend it. Steering was much easier and it was a direct bolt up except for the new splined joint.

sc revolt, are you recommending the Pro-Am box or the Tatum? If you are recommending the Pro-Am why and how do you justify the extra 100 bucks when the tatum seems to have better/more features? Not trying to start anything. Just want to know if I'm missing something.

I'm using the Pro-am box. I purchased the box from Kevin at Toys for big boys per his recommendation. He uses it in his sandbuggies that he builds. As far as the Tatum, I wasn't even aware of it till I read your post so I'm not sure how it stacks up against it.
