Help ! Problem with my steering after first run..

Hey Guys,

So I took out my 2010 revolt for the first time this weekend and I absolutely love it.... I think I might have jacked something up.... I'm going to Little Sahara with Sandracer1 in 3 weeks, so I need some help to get it fixed.....

Well I got a little comfortable and went off a Big Dirt jump and when I landed, the steering wheel was no longer straight when I was going straight.. It's now about a 1/4 of a turn to the left when going straight... I looked real good at all the A-arms, Rods, Etc and nothing is bent or out of wack.. Sandracer1 said that some of the other guys had problems like this before and that a Gear can sometimes jump up and skip a tooth in the Steering box. (maybe added Shims ?)....... It steers fine, just the steering wheel is crooked..

It's driving me crazy....... Help

Check the steering box mounting brackets. If your tie rods hit the frame when turning lock to lock the brackets are bent. The fix is to build 1/4" thick brackets to replace the 1/8" thick ones or get another set from Redrock and double them up with longer bolts. If you push the steering box back in place it will be fine till you hit some hard bumps again and it will bend easier the next time.

Re: Help ! Problem with my steering after first run..

OK, I went out and looked... When I turn the wheel hard right, the Left Tie rod hits just a little... In the other direction, the other tie rod has clearence.... I have looked at the brackets over and over, and they are as straight as can be. No Bending, swisting, nothing......If I was to push the Steering box back, I have no idea what way to bend it and how much.. Everything looks straight to me.

Even If I was to move the Box, how would that have changed the position of my steering wheel a 1/4 of a turn off now..... My first thought is the Splined steering shaft at the Box with the nut and Allen screw... Can't I just get the wheels straight and then move that steering shaft over a few splines adn we are straight again?....

Could that be what slipped?

Thanks for your help guys

You should have at least 1/4" to 1/2" clearance to the frame from the tie rods at full lock. Take out the 2 steering box mounts to see if they are flat. The box can tip to one side and not be level looking from the front also which moves the steering wheel also. Out of 6 Revolts here all of them had bent steering box mounts. Just speaking from experience.

Thanks Pilot... I will take the Plates out and lay them on a flat surface to check them... It can move the steering wheel that much?

If all you want to do is get your steering wheel "looking" straight you can pull it off with the quick release and adjust the steering wheel that way. I would suggest finding what really moved though. I am going to have to check my brackets now make sure I am clearanced OK.

Re: Help ! Problem with my steering after first run..

OK, I think I fixed it... Mike From Redrock was on the phone with me for a while and we brainstormed and I think I figured it out.....

The Brackets on the Steering box were not bent and neither was anything else... It was very weird... What I did was, I turned the steering wheel to find the exact dead center of the Steering box and then I looked at the wheels and one wheel was turning to the left big time and the other was slightly turning to the right...So I Loosened up both tie rods on each side( One Tie rod had way more threads showing than the other tie rod) and was a little loose..

Now that the Steering box was perfectly centered and now it was going to give me the same movement left or right , I adjusted the Tie rods to make both wheels perfectly straight.. Once this was all done and the Steering box was centered and wheels straight, I loosened the Steering Shaft from the Splined shaft and turned it until the steering wheel was perfectly straight and reattached it. Everything is now straight and perfect. Also the Tie Rod is no Longer hitting the Frame...They both now have the same clearence....

What I think happened was that the nuts on one of the Tie rods must have not been tight from the factory and vibrated loose, then the Rod Extended on it's own..I assume the reason my steering wheel was way to to the left, when I was going straight was because I was trying to over compensate for that crooked wheel to make the buggy go straight and I had no idea that the wheel had moved while riding..... Damn I got lucky.... Easy Fix..... Little Shahara here I come...LOL

Thanks Mike and Sandracer1

I had assumed that you had checked the front end alignment first thing.
