Actually, in today's age of machined parts being relatively inexpesive, and the tooling cost of a casting being VERY high, usually the machined parts are more economical for runs under 10,000!
I'm not really sure why Redline decided to produce their own gearbox. But I would strongly believe it is based on existing designs (like RPM and others). But with their own gear ratios and such to better match the engine, weight, and pulley combination.
It's likely that Redline was planning for the long term and decide to invest in tooling to create the castings that they get. Part cost is low but tooling cost is high........but if you spread that over 10,000 or more units, then it really pays off. If you only sell a 1,000 units castings are not nearly as economical.
