Has your rearend blown up?

Trying to see if this is a common problem.

Re: Has your rearend blown up?

Yep! My trans has blown up. I'm pretty sure I know the problem. Redline was of the impression it had to do with the main input gear being too "soft". So they introduced a harder input gear early on in their production (mid to late '07 models???).

In my own experience I have found that the overflow tube, runing out the bottom of the vehicle, allows the transmission to pump itself out of fluid. I, personally, have seen it dump nearly all of the fluid out of the transmission within 10 minutes of use!

I have routed my overflow tube upwards and attached a "bellows" style end to it, thus closing the system but allowing the air to expand as it gets hot. I haven't had a transmission problem for a year now since doing this (blew my last one up after 3 races). I think I did another post on this forum about this mod I made.

Another guy on this forum who races has also found his transmission generating enough dynamic pressure at the breather outlet to eject fluid from the tube. He has since closed his system as well. I don't believe he has blown a transmission yet racing either.

Re: Has your rearend blown up?

I wouldnt say its a common problem but it happened to me. I have an 07 which had weaker gears and my new box looks stronger and it is supposed to have stronger gears. Also I race and drive on some very rough desert courses near barstow. If all you do is recreational driving or sand it probably wouldnt be a problem.

Based on what I have seen, even a recreational wheeler with older gears and an open breather system, they are destined for failure eventually. As fluid leaves that trans (it only holds 10oz !!) things are going to get hot. And the more you heat and cool those gears (due to lack of fluid) eventually they will fail.

Close the breather off so fluid can't escape, and I think you're good for the long haul.

Re: Has your rearend blown up?

I ran a longer hose on my breather like my fuel tank breather. under the gearbox then back up and over the rear bumper mounts and put an fuel filter in the middle to allow the air to seperate from the oil. No oil has blown out yet.

Re: Has your rearend blown up?

I tore my breather tube off. I think a rock reached up and grabbed it. I put a billet breather on the vent line. I also use Mobil1 90w-140 gear lube. I noticed the trans was much quieter. I'm going to change it every year.

No broken gears yet, cross your fingers.
Here's a picture of the breathers.

That's a good setup! gives a catch can area and then drain back. And it's upwards. Great idea!

Re: Has your rearend blown up?

Thanks!
The only problem was, they only make them for 1.5" tube. So there is a black Poly-Pipe shim, so the clamp would work on 1.25" tube. they do sell them without a clamp, so you could make your own.
I liked the drain back part too. I now put in 12oz of lube. I don't care if it pushes any out, it will just drain back. The lube seems to stay clean, so far.
