Turbo and the stage 2 gearbox

After over 2 years of hard running in the sand dunes only, I just went through my 2nd design gearbox. My Revolt has been turbo charged with at least 140 hp and recently upgraded to 180 hp the entire 2 years. The only parts in the gearbox that needed replacing were the 2 pto bearings (16011). These are the ones on the lower output gear that drives the axles. They felt a little rough so I replaced them and will run for 2 more years I'm sure. I run Redline shock proof light weight (teal green) oil filled to the fill hole. I change it after about 3 trips to the dunes. I also have a magnetic drain plug. I also run an external vent tank up high so I don't loose fluid. I personally feel that a Revolt or XL that is run in the sand will not have any issue with the gearbox if its kept full of oil and maintained.

I have to agree with you Dave. I think the main reason those lower bearings go bad is they are in a bath of whatever debris is in the transmission oil and isn't caught by the magnetic drain plug. I hope my recently rebuilt tranny (all quality bearings now) lasts as long!

Re: Turbo and the stage 2 gearbox

Dang I may have needed one of those plugs, just blew up my gear box on my second weekend out with my new Yamaha engine yesterday. Maybe because its turning 11k rpm. Was about to start working on getting an rpm gearbox in there. Ill hopefully have time tomorrow to open it up and check the damage. Bravo on 2 years with 180hp though

You are running a Riot. Lots more weight. At least 4 to 5 hundred lbs. The early Riots had the 1st design gear box and were supposed to have better heat treated gears in them. The later Riots had the 2nd design box like I have in my Revolt. The gears are supposed to be better and the case is supposed to be stronger on the 2nd design. If your box is rough cast on the outside of the case it is a 1st design. Wastland performance is still selling 1st design boxes with a better gear set in them for about $1200.00 on his web site.

Re: Turbo and the stage 2 gearbox

Good call on the weight. It actually has the stronger gears from wasteland already in it, so figuring out how to get the rpm in there starts tomorrow. And ordering the damn thing of course. Man I'd love to see that 180hp in action. Can't imagine losing 400lbs and gaining 30hp from the riot, sounds awesome
