Crap in My Oil Filter

Went to replace my oil filter today and found the below crap in it. It's all some sort of greyish plastic material. No iron or aluminum in the filter. This was about 2/3rds of all material that was trapped in the filter. I didn't feel like digging it all out.

Anyone know what material in the engine might have a hard gray plastic in it??? I'm starting to worry.

Just for background info, when I first got the Riot, I had to replace the starter. I have, since, replaced the oil filter one other time since then. So.....if I had left crap in there at that time, I would have thought it got cleared out already. But I wonder......

Thoughts?

Re: Crap in My Oil Filter

Possibly your timing chain rail or guide... Looks like it could be close to the same color. Your timing chain tensioner pushes on the chain guide to keep the chain tight.

Isn't the head attached to the case with a gasket cement instead of a true gasket?

Ronny there is a head gasket in these engines. The cases are put together with a sealant.

Re: Crap in My Oil Filter

I knew there was gasket sealant in there somewhere! I can't kame out the picture real well, but some of the pieces look globby like and irregular. Just an idea.

Re: Crap in My Oil Filter

Some of it does look like old sealant, but the hard grey plastic comment got me thinking about the guides.

Jay you might want to pull the valve cover and inspect what you can see of the guides.

If it did come from the inside of the engine, it would have to go through the pump screen, pumps, oil cooler and tank. Does any of it look like a hose might be coming apart from the inside? what are the average sizes of the pieces?

You should be able to see the guide, down though the gap in between the cams. In this photo you'll see a blue rag stuffed into that gap. This was to keep fumble hands (me) from dropping tools down there.

Re: Crap in My Oil Filter

the pieces are small, about the size of a grain of rice. And they are very hard. Pushing on them with a screw driver on a hard surface I couldn't mush them or break them. So I'm thinking they are plastic, not sealant or RTV of that sort. They had no squish to them.

The color in the picture didn't come out well. They all have a slightly greyish color to them, some maybe more brown due to oil wetting.

I have to be honest.......and this is going to sound sadistic......but in a way I hope it DOES blow up. I've been wanting to put an R1 or bigger motor in this thing for a while now. And my last two trips to the dunes and not being able to get up all the hills like I used to in my Revolt makes me want more power in this thing.

So am I going to pull the valve cover and look??????? UUUUmmmmmm......that's a tough call! :-)

I hadn't thought of it that way! But with my wife, when something like that blows up, she immediately smiles and says "Well.....I guess we are done spending money on THAT toy, now." And then I start sneaking parts and motors in the "back door" to the garage.
