Blown Up Big Gun Exhaust

Take a look at these pics! Just got back from a 3 day trip to Glamis. After 2 long runs I blew the end off, blew a hole in the side, and blew out most of the packing. Tried to fix it with an aluminum can and clamp.......just blew that out.

Time to find a different exhaust. I was warned before getting it, suppose I should have listened!

Re: Blown Up Big Gun Exhaust

Yah, here's my first Big Gun muffler at 2.5 hours at the dunes:

And here's the second one they sent me after a couple hours of riding. At every stop I had to tighten the screws to prevent a complete blowout. Notice the end cap screw missing and the screw on the side backing out. All packing was gone from the muffler at roughly 4 hours. At every stop I could see strands of packing around the screws and coming out the spark arrestor screen.

Wow. That really sucks. I'd be a little pissed on that one.

I'm a bit happier I went with a Gibson.
Once I got it fitted up properly. I drove it for two days without a single issue.

Re: Blown Up Big Gun Exhaust

I ran the Gibson on my Riot for a year without any issues. Many hours there with trips to Little Sahara, UT/St Anthony's ID and many to the Oregon dunes. I couldn't even get a full day out of the Big Gun.

Wow that isn't good! I put one on mine not too long ago but i haven't ran it yet as its in the garage for the winter. Hopefully mine doesn't burn up so quickly.

Re: Blown Up Big Gun Exhaust

I can't believe no one commented on my attempted makeshift blocking plate out of a Bud Light beer can! I'm going to pull the muffler in a few days. I will post better pictures once I do.

Talking with Mike at RRR, he believes this muffler may have had the packing/design that was known to blow out. Apparently Big Gun made modifications to the design to improve this issue. Last I heard he was going to check with Big Gun on getting it warrantied and a new one to me. I will keep the board updated on how that goes.

As a side note, I also pulled the spark plugs to make sure the motor wasn't running lean. It was NOT running lean. You can see in these pics that the plugs are slightly black indicating that the mixture was a touch rich. And there was a slight fuel smell on the plugs when I pulled them.

Last Sept speedracers blew his out and we actually lined it with steel soup cans inside and blew them apart in a matter of hours. Big Gun appears to be Big Crap! He repacked it with new high density packing and when he started it we watched it start blowing the packing out immediately. It looked like it was snowing. Funny stuff when it is not you. The ungodly noise is deafening!!!

Re: Blown Up Big Gun Exhaust

I use the stock muff. Been great.

Can you really notice a difference in power with the after market setup? On my dirt bikes I never noticed any change in performance.

It sure did on my Riot - it really seemed "stuffed up" with the stock muffler. My Revolt never made a trip on the stock muffler, so can't comment there
