My bad day

Well I thought I had it figured out. Or at least closer than I had it. Belt #3. Put the paddles on and made some hard drag runs. After run 6 I got this- see pic.
I heard a ticking and knew what it was. A FREAKING TIME BOMB!!!! Let off and went to turn off the track and it would not move because the belt was all wrapped around everything. Back to the drawing board!!! I will go back to my base set up with the lighter spring and tune with it. I hope the temp light is an easier fix.

Re: My bad day

Todd,

Have you put a temp gun on your clutches after you have taken a hard run?

Re: My bad day

NO. But I can feel they are too hot. I have to guess that the excess heat is coming from overrev on topend. This belt had about 20 hours on it. It was holding up well until I got the boost up to 12-13 lbs and put the paddles on. I am going to call Lon today and see what he recommends I do. I think I will go back to the lighter spring and start messing with the weights again. I know I can find the sweet spot. I use a friend of mine as a guage on performance. He has a KFX 700 built slightly and on the bottle. I looked at his belt yesterday it is about half the size as mine and he is putting about 97hp to it and it holds up fine. I am going to have to settle for a little less performance to get the life out of it. You know the old saying, "You can't win the race if you don't finish". I am going to work the weights heavy to light this time, not light to heavy. Mike I sent you a PM.

Re: My bad day

Are severe duty kevlar belts available for this clutch?
what about adjustable clutch weights?

obviously you are getting the belt too hot and are on the right track in trying different springs and weights to get it tuned.

on my turbo RZR I tried a stock belt and it blew in less than 100 miles. EPI severe duty belts were lasting about 600 miles. The belt on the Redline is a lot bigger than the RZR belt...

Re: My bad day

I'm going to guess that you are power braking the car before you leave the line. The belt will hold up if you just make a couple passes, but if you keep doing that with out a cool off period, you'll probably keep buying belts. We just bring our rpm's up to about 2000 and gas it. Haven't had any issues yet in a year and a half. I know you are turboed, so is the Weber RZR we run with and he uses the same starting line procedure we do.

Re: My bad day

To answer all questions in the above thread. Yes they are Kevlar belts. No, I do not have a temp gun, yet. I do not break torque it anymore. I found that out on the first belt I distroyed. I am working the clutch weights. I will keep moving forward on the clutching. Hopefully I am close. Thanks for all the ideas and input.

Re: My bad day

Is your tranny and engine lined up properly. This could cause extreme wear and destroy a belt quickly. Was your motor taken out when the turbo work and mod's done. Redline makes a tool for proper alignment of the belt.

Hey Todd you'll figure it out . Just remember to work to keep the belt temps down around 120 degrees as you are developing your set up.

Yes they took the motor out. I do not have and cannot afford the tools right now. I have checked it by measuring and using some straight edges to do the best I can with what I have. It seems to be correct or extremely close. One of the members is sending me the alignment bar to see if it is properly aligned but the most important tool is the one for the trans and motor alignment I would think, and as of now I do not have the precise way to check it. I got about 20-25 hours out of the last belt and all was good during tuning until I put the paddles on and made 6 runs on the drag testing the rpms. The over rev and too many runs I think are what did me in. If I could control myself and show some restraint I would be better off. Just cannot seem to keep the grin off my face and the pedal off the floor. LOL. Belt wear was good during testing. I checked it after every run and made adjustments to weight. I have borrowed a heat gun this should help a lot.
