Transmission Breather Fix

Even with the new style transmission, I was blowing huge amounts of oil out the breather of my Riot's transmission on long extended runs. I first started by running the breather line to the top of my roll bar using a clear inline fuel filter mid-way and a small K&N breather at the top. With that setup, I would still see oil pumping to the very top of my roll cage. Without any other venting, I had to wait for the transmission to "burp" the air out (up the vent line) and the tranny oil would slowly return to the transmission.

I've now tapped a secondary breather line at the rear of my transmission as seen in the photos. Behind this hole is just the internal shift lever, so no fear of interfering with components inside the transmission.

After testing this weekend, this setup works perfect. I ran full speed for as long as I could then got out and checked the clear breather lines and there was never any oil in either line.

As a secondary "plus", the rear breather line makes it easy to do tranny oil changes with a small funnel and a matching piece of hose!

Re: Transmission Breather Fix

Right now they "T" off up higher at a breather. Just precautionary until I was able to test effectiveness of this mod...

I'll probably leave as-is so oil will have somewhere to go if I manage a roll over

Re: Transmission Breather Fix

thats a good idea..i can see how the thick oil in one hose would
keep it from actually venting until it burped or cooled down

It looks like a 1/8" npt 90 degree to 1/4" hose barb. You can try your local plumbing store, Lowe's or Home Depot. You can also try your local auto store. Some of them carry these type of fittings too.

Re: Transmission Breather Fix

So why do these trannys have so much pressure build up? Great write up thanks.

Re: Transmission Breather Fix

IMO it is not so much how much pressure, rather the way the oil sling gets in the pressure release path. I find a very minimal amount is ever "pushed" out. But if you have no way of capturing that little bit everytime you ride, you run out of oil over time.

Re: Transmission Breather Fix

Sandracer1 is correct. There is no real pressure build up, but once the oil gets slung into the breather line, it continues to push the oil out on long extended runs since it is difficult for air in the transmission to "burp" past the oil in the line allowing the oil to re-enter the transmission. I've actually seen oil push a couple feet up a line into a breather on my old Riot (had clear breather line). With a second breather installed very little oil actually gets into the breather line and what is left easily flows back into the transmission.

Another advantage to the second breather line: I use a small funnel with a piece of hose and use the second breather for my fill point on the tranny.

Re: Transmission Breather Fix

I just bought a riot and it appears it is seeping from where the cases go together. It also appears that the valve cover is leaking and it needs a new exhaust gasket. Any suggestions. Easy e do you have a measurement of where to drill and tap for the extra breather line? Thanks in advance.
