redline clutch machining for top speed gains

This is a discussion on redline clutch machining for top speed gains within the General Revolt Discussion forums, part of the General Redline category; do you work on the rzr clutches? if so, then what type of speed can be had. mike...

During some practice laps today on the Lucas Oil track here at Speedworld, I got the chance to put a video camera on my rig recording the pullies. I found that the setup that I have (which is stock) does close the drive pulley down to where the belt is riding fully at the outside edge of the pulley. Given the distance stays the same between pulleys and that the belt length doesn't change, how does machining the pulleys net a better top end? It seems to me that once the belt gets to the outter most part of the drive pulley, then that's it..........no more gearing beyond that. So I'm not sure I follow how machining will make it gear up more.

Can you help explain how the higher top end comes from machining? I can completely understand the mid-range and such. But I'm not sure I follow the topend (which is where I want it most for desert racing).

Thanks.

tricks of the trade pal! you cant stretch the belt, so in order to give the bike a taller gear ratio you have to get the belt further up in the primary, and further down in the secondary. a stock redline primary (smaller clutch) usually gets the belt right to the top, or sometimes about an 1/8th inch below the top. but with my tricks i can get the belt to come up even further in the primary and with some tricks to the secondary, i can make the belt go further in the secondary. since the belt is a fixed length, and you cant not stretch it, you have to allow the two drive pulleys change the ratio at which the belt contacts them. if you look at the pictures of the before and after machining, you can clearly see the areas where the belt has not ridden if you can get the belt up higher in the primary, it will force itself lower in the secondary. doing this will net you the top speed gains.

OK. That makes sense. My video showed that the belt was getting to the outer edge, but I couldn't tell if it had any more to go. Wouldn't take much to get another 5 to 10 mph. So that makes sense.

Yes, I like the mogul's section. No one is probably as fast as our rigs through that. But unfortunately that is only about 50 yards of a 5 mile lap for the desert race. This thing SUCKS in the 180 degree turns and sweepers! SUCKS!!!!!!!
