Remember a key design of bumper engineering is to crater effectively and not transfer the destruction to the frame itself!! A bumper is a much easier fix than a frame repair!! That said, the bent tranny output shaft really sucks!!

Now back to the regular thread!!

Also, If Comet is going out of business, you folks may think of the the Polaris Sno Mo clutch as a replacement, it is way easier to tune and find parts for!! I love mine!!

since the comet is basically the exact same clutch as the stock polaris clutch, i would feel certain that any of the polais setups would have the same taper as the comet that is on your bikes stock. they "should" interchange with no problems.\

and to cellette, i suppose you did figure out that i was an output shaft? did my trick help you to see it?

so rrawtry....

are we better off buying a polaris clutch and machining that one?
or are the polaris and comet parts interchangeable?...

It wouldnt be cool to do some work on the comet clutch and then if it breaks, not being able to find parts for it...

Adam your trick worked fantastic. Had to switch the wheel to a high speed grinder instead of one designed for stripe removal as those spin slower.

The Polaris clutch can be serviced easily in the aftermarket through TEAM, Erlandson Performance (EPI), and many, many others..... I have yet to find anyone who prefers the Comet clutch and their parts are much harder to come by..... The Polaris Clutch I run is the exact same clutch that Polaris used on their Weber Snow Mobiles. To me, having that much aftermarket support and that much of a huge difference in easily accessible parts(weights, springs, rebuild kits, etc) just makes more sense.

Yes you can sorta?!?! The Polaris clutch is a bit thicker in the sheaves by about 5/8ths of an inch so I basically add that as a gap on the secondary clutch. I use the tool to check for alignment and then add 5/8 worth of shims. You can find the shims in the nut section of a good Ace Hardware!!

Did the Polaris clutch get rid of the dreaded clutch squeal on decelloration? Do you have the needed part number for the Polaris clutch assembly and a rough idea on the cost? Any OE tool part numbers needed to remove the stock clutch assembly?

Once again thanks for doing all the leg work

Dude

a polaris clutch in general is exactly like the one you have, i mean EXACTLY except for it is a tiny bit different and has more available parts for it. if you have belt squeal on decelleration you need to figure out why the belt is squealing and try to diagnose the cause. usually once your belt wears out, it gets thinner and the secondary (belt tensioner) cant squeeze closed enough to keep the belt tight so it slips in the secondary or primary. OR, if you have an aftermarket primary spring that is too soft of a spring rate, it will not allow the primary to snap back shut on decelleration and cause the belt to slip. but one of the main causes of belt slippage is the super slick surface of the clutch sheaves (halves). the surface is slick as glass, and if the planets are not in alignment, and the sun is not at 23* north (purely sarcastic) the belt will slip. if i were you i'd take my clutch cover off and ride the thing and see which pulley the belt is slipping in. then diagnose from there. also get a set of calipers and measure the belts thickness across the top. i dont know your belts max and min thicknesses, but i'm sure someone on here can find it in a manual for you. if the belt is too thin, it will cause the belt to slip and its just time to replace the belt pal!
