High five on the explanation of the fuel controller Ronny. Mike

The backfiring and flames are actually a sign of a lean condition. The redlines have to come from the factory extremely lean in order to meet epa emmision standards just like all of the brand atvs and utvs. If you change the exhaust to a free flowing design, the motor will become even leaner. The fuel injection systems are not as advanced as an automobile and can only make minute adjustments to changing conditions. The programmer works like an electronic jet kit and will allow you to adjust the fuel settings on the fly in order to adhere to changing riding conditions such as major elevation changes or temperature and humidity changes, along with different performance modications that have been made to the unit.
Ronny, we haven't forgot about you either. As soon as we get a riot back in here i should have a brand exhaust right out to you. Thank you again for being so patient with us. |

The weber's are definitely set rich from the factory. Check your plugs and you will see black sooty plugs on a stock revolt. The ecu does not read oxygen or air fuel ratio in the exhaust, so it senses the closed throttles when you lift off the throttle and the engine momentarily goes into a lean condition. If you lift slowly it will not backfire. If the engine was in a normally lean conditon it would backfire under load or full throttle. This would be the infamous lean misfire and you would see white plugs or even burned electrodes. We have installed K&N's directly to the throttle bodies and a free flowing header system and the plugs are now starting to look a light tan color. Also have installed air fuel ratio guage in the exhaust collector and it reads rich under excelleration and normal at idol. It will only read lean when you lift off the throttle. I do believe that there is horsepower to be gained from a custom fuel curve, because the stock ecu just does not measure enough parameters to keep the fuel delivery optimized. Also being able to adjust the fuel curve for different elevation would be a good thing. I am looking forward to what biggun develops in the fuel programer, but don't agree with the lean engine theory. I am with rrawtry on this one.

I take my Revolt up into the Wasatch mountains, in northern Utah. The road I take will lets me get to one of the highest peaks around. Its at 9,250 feet (GPS reading) If ever it was going to run rich, thats the place. But it starts and runs great.
When I've been to Sand Hollow, (3,014') It runs great there too. On the Walbro ECU, there is a small opening, like a 1/8" hose barb. I think this is the air pressure port. The ECU seems to be able to adjust to different elevations. Or maybe the MAP is making the changes, I'm not sure. My intake and filter will pass 30% more air than stock. I also have a free flowing exhaust. When Red Rock upgraded my plugs to NGK's, the stock Champion's were a little dark, but not wet. Klemdotter, aren't you almost at Sea level? If so, it should be running lean. I think there is room for a fuel curve change. With klemdotter's air/fuel gauge set up, it could be dialed in.

Hey Kurtis,
Are they going to be forestry approved or have spark arrestor capability for the days you want to go to trail ride and Mr. Ranger decides he wants to check and sticks a wire up your tail pipe?

I read this last winter.
The new law states that it has to have a registered USFS number. After looking for evidence of tampering, the ranger will look on a list for the number. If they cant find the number, by law they can make you shut off your machine and tow it from forest service land. Its up to the individual ranger on how this is enforced. OUCH!
