Default Upcoming Whiplash Race - Snowflake, AZ

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am heading out Thursday to start setting up for the Whiplash desert race in Heber, Arizona. They call it the "Snowflake" race. It's considered the biggest race Whiplash puts on all year and usually draws a couple of high dollar trucks.

I'm hoping to bring home a first place trophy. but there will be other Redline's in the crowd (a Riot and a Revolt). So I hope we all make it to the end and can blow away the competition. I will try to post pics, videos, or whatever after my return next Monday.

I know it's You and Jerry (getnolder) in the Revolts, who is piloting the Riot?

Monsoon season is nearly over. this is huricane generated. About every 10 years (or so) a hurricane will come up from baja and extend enough north to dump rain on us. Looks like one is coming this way. Weather forcasts are showing rain starting on Saturday..........which of course is the day of the race. That will REALLY suck for racing. Mud everywhere. I could only hope it rains hard the whole time and keeps my goggles clear of mud. Because I probably won't have enough tearoffs for a 2.5 hour race in those types of conditions! Gonna carry a small towel with me.

four by nut, whats the number on the your racing revolt? I'm pretty sure we are going up there to spectate the race. Wanna give you a big wave as you go by. I will be the one waving my arm in a circle as my favorites go by. So if it is a revolt coming I will be waving a circle. My brother is racing a Kawasaki 450 dirt bike #777.

We had an awesome time this weekend, even with all of the mud! Jerry (getnolder) and I were camped together. And we were just down from the high dollar Rhinos! Jerry was in the Sport Modified class and I was in the pro modified class.

The prerun on Friday went well, with Jerry and I taking turns leading around the course. Not running hard, we ran up to 60 mph on some of the high speed sections.

We woke up Saturday (race day) to overcast skies. Big trucks and buggies were starting ahead of us (6am start!!). We watched for a couple of hours.........and then the bottom dropped out of the clouds. It rained like CRAZY for about 2 hours, hailing at one point! We hid under our canapies trying to figure out how we were going to get through the mud!!! About an hour before our start time, the rain let up and the sun started to break through. Unfortunately, the damage had been done and the top 12" of earth was nothing but muck!

The race started with me about 6 positions back from the start (another class went first and I was 3rd among pro-modifieds). Jerry was a bit further back in the starting order, having to wait for all pro's and desert pro's to go first.

I quickly realized that my tearoffs were NOT going to work for this crap! I quickly ripped all of them off and started swabbing with a rag. Before we were even out of the pits (about 1/2 mile of pits) I had already caught up to the first rig in front of me (30 starting intervals). I quickly passed him and never looked back. Within the first lap (approximately 20 miles long) I had passed all other UTVs in front of me. For the rest of the race I never looked back. Bobby Vanbeekem in his new 800cc Teryx was tearing things up! He started about 3 minutes behind me and had made up the difference during lap 3. There was one point where I had it pinned on a long straight away. I was turning about 7,000rpm (couldn't seem to get it over 7k for some reason) and Bobby came along side and passed me at about 5mph more! I couldn't hang with him as his rig just seemed to have more power and cornering. He picked up a couple of flats and slowed, but not enough for me to catch him. He placed first, beating me by about 3 minutes 30 seconds (over a 2 hour race). I placed 2nd in promodified and 2nd in overall time.

During the awards ceremony, someone driving another UTV (Rhino/Ranger) yelled out that we should be in our own class!!! I think after 2 races in pro-modified and showing we can run with the best of them..........they are not liking the idea any more! We'll see where it goes as I plan to continue to race the pro class until Whiplash won't allow it any longer. Not sure why there is a problem with competition.............

I'm going to have to figure out why I couldn't go faster than that as I have regularly tuned 8k to 8.5k in the past. I am assuming it was due to the 6500 ft of altitude and about 200 pounds of mud I was carrying!!!!

Jerry had a mechanical problem during his 4th of 5th lap and couldn't finish. But his times were VERY close to mine and certainly would have been in the top 3 or 4 in overall times!!!

We had a great time and I am looking forward to the next race. I'm going to have to figure out how to get just a little bit more power out of that motor. If I could have turned the 8 or 8500 rpm, I'm not sure Bobby would have been passing me like that...........but likely would have still beat me in the tighter corning sections.

Hope to see more of you out at the races!!!

Jay

I was piloting the Riot. Ran fine caught Razor S stuck behind a Rhino with black plastic bags stuck up high on both sides of the roll bar. Honking the horn made NO difference to either of them. They did not move off to the side and eventually a China light caught up to us and absolutly drilled me in the rear ( Nice blue paint on the back bars) I was getting totally mud covered by the Razor and Rhino. Finally plugged the radiator. Had to stop every lap in the middle of the course and at the pits and wash out the radiator. I'm pretty sure I moved over and let you by. Dropped in behind and followed for awhile. If you are # 5 I wish I would have had a camera on you as you went over a water bar. My son was blown away with how high the back end kicked up. I backed it down after seeing that! All I saw on the tach was 7 grand, 50 mph. I'm going to have to do a lot of mods before racing again. The car was totally filled w/mud inside. Need radiator moved to the rear, doors, rear bumper. We had a blast. My son talked about it the whole 3hr drive home

Sounds like Redline had a good showing. Congrats on the 2nd place finish. And on the mud in the radiator what we used to do in dirt stock car racing is hang some window screan a few inchs in front of the radiator just attached on top. It catchs the mud and since its only attached on the top it shakes and the mud usually falls off it.

The bucking in the backend that you point out is something I have tried REALLY hard to tune out of these shocks. But just can't get it down. It seems the solution is the coilovers! I'm sure you don't get that much........and I have seen Revolts with Elkas that don't do that. So.........that's where I am headed. I wonder when it was I caught up and passed you? Was it towards the end? What class were you racing?
